The cylinder liner is a cylindrical component fitted into the engine block to form the cylinder bore. It provides a precision-machined surface for the piston and piston rings to slide against, and it transfers heat from the piston to the engine block's cooling system. In many heavy-duty and diesel engines, liners are replaceable, allowing the engine to be rebuilt without replacing the entire block.
