Main bearings are precision-engineered bearings that support the crankshaft inside the engine block. They sit between the crankshaft's main journals and the engine block's bearing saddles, allowing the crankshaft to rotate smoothly at high speed while carrying the forces generated by combustion. They also maintain the critical oil clearance that allows a thin film of oil to separate the crankshaft from the bearing surface, preventing metal-to-metal contact.
