The piston moves up and down inside the cylinder. It pulls in air and fuel, compresses them, takes the force of combustion, and pushes out exhaust. That force goes through the connecting rod to the crankshaft. If the piston is worn or damaged, you'll lose power, burn oil, and may hear knocking.
